Move Your App!
May 28, 2010
I mentioned yesterday I’d be staying local for an event in San Francisco to announce winners in the Move Your App! Developer Challenge we’re cosponsoring with our friends at Snaptic. Great day, lots of fun – and there’s more to come! Read on for event photos, news on the winners, how HopeLab got involved, and what’s next.
And the Winner Is …
Actually, we had a few winners! From 246 registered contestants representing 3 continents and 12 countries, 10 apps made the list of finalists – a diverse mix of ideas on how a mobile app might get people moving more. A panel of judges, including Pam Omidyar, cast votes. Here’s how things shook out:
Pickup Sports, Peter Ma, Los Angeles, Calif., USA (Prize: trip to TED Global 2010)
3rd Place
Wagz, Atlanta, Ga., USA (Prize: Android phone)
4th Place (tie)
WalkArt, Cambridge, UK (Prize: Android phone)
5 Minutes Break, HelloAndroid, Hungary (Prize: Android phone)
The Backstory
In February, Pat and Snaptic CEO Steve Brown saw celebrity chef Jamie Oliver accept the TED Prize and call upon TEDsters to put their time and talent toward the fight against childhood obesity. Pat and Steve put their heads together, and took things a step further: They came up with a way to engage an entire group of talented people around the world – Android developers – to use mobile technology to get people off the couch and moving around. So this, led to this.
We’re passionate about finding fun, creative ways to use tech to promote healthy behavior – it’s what our work with Re-Mission and Zamzee is all about. It’s been great working with likeminded folks at Snaptic, TED Prize, and KidsHealth to rally Android developers to get excited about the potential for mobile apps to take things even further. Big thanks to all the sponsors and developers who participated.
What’s Next
The competition continues! Building cool apps is one thing, but will they catch on with users? We want to know, so every developer whe entered the challenge now has 100 days to prove their app works in the real world, with real users – and a chance at a new prize.
Plus, rumor has it Snaptic is thinking about rolling out future developer challenges to take on other social issues. Tools that support the environment, education, government transparency – let ‘em know what kind of apps you want to see!
And here at HopeLab, we’re thinking about ways we can tap into the potential of mobile apps to make an even bigger impact with Zamee. Stay tuned!
