Book Roll Please…2nd Edition
April 19, 2010
This book roll is just two months shy of it being an annual post. Eep. It’s amazing how the months have flown by with everything going on here in the office. You wouldn’t think anyone has time to read, but it seems there are always people here indulging (or planning to indulge) in something interesting!
Here’s a peek at what HopeLabber’s are reading:
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
“[Outliers is] a fascinating read about how serendipity, in combination with good old-fashioned elbow grease (and tons of it), can lead to excellence in unexpected ways. It’s filled with interesting social science factoids and examples of real-life stories from past and present.”
Recommended by Lalita, Senior Research Analyst (and our user testing guru!)
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
“I was drawn to this book by friend recommendations and its extraordinarily melodramatic title – perhaps a nice counterpoint to my life! Within the first few pages, you can sense the emotions bubbling under the surface. Seems like it will be a great read!”
Recommended by Brian, Program Associate (our other user testing guru!)
Drive by Daniel Pink
“I was drawn to the book after hearing Daniel interviewed on NPR and hearing Chris and Fred talk about it. The subtitle says it all – “the surprising truth about what motivates us.” I haven’t completed the book, but what is intriguing is the amount of literature that supports intrinsic over extrinsic forms of motivation and how much of society is driven by an old ‘carrot and stick’ model of thinking.”
Recommend by Lance, Business Development & Governance Consultant
Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller
“I am a slow reader, but I ate this book up like it was a large scoop of chocolate banana almond ice cream from Marianne’s Ice Cream. Donald’s reflections on his spiritual journey, stories about people he’s encountered, and challenges to his reader evoked in me a desire to dig deeper and get more real. He’s honest, reflective, and funny and his book is definitely a stimulating and easy read. I particularly enjoyed the chapter subtitled ‘Penguin Sex.’” ![]()
